Working on the '08 PD budget. We buy practice and duty ammo off a state bid list. Mostly from Federal which, by the way, is located in my county. Wait for 9mm and .40 is four to six months. .223 ammo is a year out. Handgun ammo cost up 48%. .223 ammo cost up 132%!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May have to start buying practice ammo off the net. At least it will be here before I'm retired.

Unbelievable! You would think they'd take care of their locals.

I've got a buddy who works for Federal and a very large percentage of their output is being shipped directly overseas to our boys in green (or tan as it were). As much as it's an inconvenience or how expensive it is to buy ammo I'd much prefer that their production goes to those who are using it and be used on those who need it used on. When we finally pull our boys out and bring them home ammo prices should drop through the floor as the wartime productions levels will take some time to ramp down. That's when I'm going to stock up on ammo again. Russ, have you asked Federal about getting factory seconds for training purposes? They might be able to do something for you, give them a call. If needed I could talk to my buddy that works there and see if he knows anything or anyone to contact. Cheers,
Hanns

Hanns: you are right about the military getting its ammo first. I agree with that wholeheartedly. I'm surprised about the .40 and chalk that up to scrap metal shortages. I haven't thought about rejects for practice but would certainly consider it. Heck, I may even go with Wolff polymer case stuff if need be.

I've shot literally thousands of the factory seconds, nothing wrong with them. For some reason or another (mixed primers, minor weight difference on the lot, etc) Federal failed them on their QC and won't sell them as regular ammo. Might be able to get some deal worked with them of getting the seconds for training purposes only. Worth a try. Cheers,
Hanns

Thanks. I'll grab that friend's info from you off board.
